About us

The Humanities Institute (HI) is one of the projects of the College of Humanities, University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The HI was founded on Saturday, 31 August 2019, during a three day NIHSS-sponsored workshop at the Unite Building, Howard College Campus.  

The first Chair and Director of the HI, was Prof Nhlanhla Mkhize, followed by Prof Johannes A. (Jannie) Smit (since 30 June 2020).

The HI has a number of partnership projects.
